We are delighted to welcome back to Mayfield Cellist Edvard Pogossian who was the overall winner of the 2022 Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition.

Puccini’s Messa di Gloria was a graduation exercise, although you’d never know it. Even in his early 20s, Puccini was crafting tunes and creating drama as he later would as a mature opera composer. Elgar, by contrast, never wrote an opera: he didn’t need to. He spent 20 years thinking about his Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, which was his dramatic masterpiece.

This concert is dedicated to the memory of Antonia Beary, whose focused and fervent belief in the potential of her staff and pupils was visceral and visible to all. Above everything, Antonia believed in the power of the arts to transform lives, and particularly the lives of the young. Antonia would have been enormously and justifiably proud of the part that her girls will play in this concert, and she would be the first to acknowledge the vital role that music and singing play in the educational and spiritual welfare of the school.

This concert is kindly sponsored by Mr and Mrs Simon and Caroline Tindall
