Beethoven’s ‘Archduke’ Trio
Trio Isimsiz
More prosaically described as the Piano Trio in B-flat major, opus 97, Beethoven’s ‘Archduke’ Trio was composed in 1810 and 1811 (after the ‘Egmont’ Overture and before the Seventh Symphony, if you need context). The Trio was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, youngest child of the Holy Roman Emperor – Rudolph was bankrolling Beethoven at the time but, with a dozen pieces written in his honour, the Archduke got good value for money. The second half of the concert will feature another piano trio; Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 1 in B flat major (D. 898), written in 1827 and 1828. In this performance, cellist Edvard Pogossian, Overall Winner of the 2022 Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition, returns to Mayfield as a member of Trio Isimsiz after his stellar performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto that closed the 2024 Festival.
“…….it’s hard to know how Trio Isimsiz could have bettered such artistry and distinctiveness.” The Strad
