Beethoven’s ‘Archduke’ Trio
The Paddington Trio
Important Note: In a change to the details of this concert as shown in the printed publicity brochure for the festival, Trio Isimsiz have sadly had to withdraw for reasons of serious illness. However, the Mayfield Festival is extremely fortunate that The Paddington Trio have agreed to step-in at short notice to perform Beethoven’s ‘Archduke’ Trio. The other repertoire to be featured in this concert has changed to that which is shown below.
More prosaically described as the Piano Trio in B-flat major, opus 97, Beethoven’s ‘Archduke’ Trio was composed in 1810 and 1811 (after the ‘Egmont’ Overture and before the Seventh Symphony, if you need context). The Trio was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, youngest child of the Holy Roman Emperor – Rudolph was bankrolling Beethoven at the time but, with a dozen pieces written in his honour, the Archduke got good value for money. Prior to the performance of that composition, in the first half of the concert, The Paddington Trio will perform Ellen Lindquist‘s Second Piano Trio, Shining Through (written in 2023) and Maurice Ravel‘s Piano Trio in A minor.
Formed in 2020 and based in London, The Paddington Trio have rapidly established an international profile, winning major prizes including the 2024 Triomphe de l’Art International Competition and the Parkhouse Award at Wigmore Hall, and performing at prestigious venues and festivals across Europe and beyond. Renowned for their vitality, polish and communicative depth, The Paddington Trio brings both authority and freshness to the piano trio repertoire.
