Archbishop v. The King
The history of Mayfield's medieval great hall
When Archbishop Winchelsey built the Great Hall deep in the Sussex forest, little did he realise that his row with King Edward I would end with the King saying ‘You look after the spiritual – I will threaten your estates on earth.’ With that the King exiled the Archbishop.
That and many other stories about the building, its history, architecture and the various ways in which the Hall was used over 700 years are graphically presented by historians Tim Cornish and Dr Joanna Weddell in the very building which eventually became Mayfield School Chapel.
